London now has an urban ropeway – the first in the UK. The gondola lift opened prior to the start of the Olympic Games in summer 2012. The Emirates Air Line connects the ExCel Exhibition Centre at the Royal Victoria Dock with the O2 Arena on the Greenwich peninsula. The 10-passenger gondolas travel the 1,100 m stretch across the Thames at a speed of 6 m/s. Up to 2,500 people are carried per hour and direction in these spacious cabins. Bicycles can also be taken on board without any problem. The one millionth passenger was counted after just two months, demonstrating the fact that the lift has been very well received and perfectly integrated into the public transport network.
